Cultural Capital and the Academia

Community Studies Center Presentations address current issues, examine completed studies from new perspectives and include them in the academic agenda.

Ayşe Mahinur Tezcan will be the guest of the presentation organized by the Center for Community Studies. “Cultural Capital and the Academy: Reflections of the Post-1980 Social Transformation in the Turkish Academy” will be moderated by Nihat Erdoğmuş.

In this presentation, it will be discussed how the differentiation in the cultural capital levels of academics affects their perspectives on academia. The data of a qualitative study conducted with the aim of understanding the subject will be presented. In this context, the index used for the cultural capital levels of academics before their involvement in the academy process will be put forward and the changes in this point will be discussed in the process of their involvement in the academy. With the evaluations of academics on elitism in academia, the relationship between academia and politics, academic tradition, ideal academy, and academician, today's academy and academics will be conveyed through the eyes of academics. In this context, the cultural and social construction of the academy, which affects social change as well as being affected by this change, starting from Darülfunun in our country to the universities of the Republican period, will be discussed.

The presentation will examine the changes in the cultural capital levels of the actors in the academy within the historical process of the university institution.
