Ibn al-'Arabī's Doctrine of Guardianship

Philosophy & Science Studies Center Presentations address current issues, examine completed studies from new perspectives, and include them in the academic agenda.

Ali İhsan Kılıç will be the guest of the presentation organized by the Center for Philosophy & Science Studies. Ercan Alkan will moderate the program in which relevant issues will be examined based on the thesis titled “Ibn al-'Arabī's Doctrine of Guardianship”.

In this presentation, the issue of guardianship, which is among the main topics of discussion in the history of Sufism, will be discussed within the framework of Muhyiddin Ibn al-'Arabī's approaches. In order to reveal how the issue developed in Ibn al-'Arabī's corpus, the chronology of his works will be taken into account and the concepts on which the doctrine was shaped will be tried to be determined. In the presentation, firstly, the aspects of the issue of wilāyah in relation to the issues of existence and knowledge will be discussed, and then the prophethood-wilāyah debates, which correspond to one of the problematic areas since the early periods of Sufism history, will be evaluated from the perspective of Ibn al-ʿArabī. In this context, the main topics of discussion such as revelation and inspiration, miracles and miracles, and ismat, and hifz will be discussed.

The dimension of the doctrine that re-entered the literature with Ibn al-'Arabī in relation to the debates on khatmiyyah has been one of the key concepts of the issue of gradation and knowledge in post-prophetic piety. For this reason, Ibn al-'Arabī's conception of history will also be discussed through this concept. Thus, the main areas that the subject of wilāyah is related to at the level of doctrine will be clarified and the dimensions that Ibn al-'Arabī's approaches have brought to the issue will be revealed.
