In İLEM Istanbul Talks, this time we will listen to Rania Awaad, on the topic of “"Coping with the Psychological Impacts of Earthquakes" by moderation of Mehmet Büyükçorak.
“Coping with the Psychological Impacts of Earthquakes” is a disaster relief training led by Rania Awaad that aims to provide victims and affected individuals with the necessary tools and guidance to manage post-traumatic events and recover from disasters. The training will cover the psychological impacts of earthquakes, types of trauma, mental health challenges, coping strategies, resources related to mental health. Additionally, it will explore the role of religion in managing these challenges. This training will utilize case studies to provide practical insights and will equip attendees with mental health support tools and religious guidance to process calamities. Overall, the main objectives of this training are to provide mental health support and religious guidance to those impacted.

Rania Awaad
Rania Awaad, M.D. is a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Stanford University School of Medicine where she is the Director of the Stanford Muslim Mental Health & Islamic Psychology Lab as well Stanford University's Affiliate Chaplain. She also serves as the Associate Division Chief for Public Mental Health and Population Sciences as well as the Section Co-Chief of Diversity and Cultural Mental Health. In addition, she is a faculty member of the Abbasi Program in Islamic Studies at Stanford University. She pursued her psychiatric residency training at Stanford where she also completed a postdoctoral clinical research fellowship with the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).
Prior to studying medicine, she pursued classical Islamic studies in Damascus, Syria and holds certifications (ijaza) in Qur’an, Islamic Law and other branches of the Islamic Sciences. Dr. Awaad has also previously served as the first female Professor of Islamic Law at Zaytuna College, a Muslim Liberal Arts College in Berkeley, CA. In addition, she serves as the Director of The Rahmah Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating Muslim women and girls. Dr. Awaad been the recipient of several awards and grants for her work. She is a nationally recognized speaker, award-winning teacher, researcher and author in both the Islamic and medical sciences.

Mehmet Büyükçorak
Mehmet Büyükçorak was born in 1990 in Çorum, Türkiye. He started his education at Kocasinan Primary School, then at Bahçelievler Cumhuriyet Anatolian High School. He finished his Bachelorette in the field of Psychology at Bilgi University. He went to San Diego, California for foreign language education in 2011. In 2013 attended UCLA psychology summer school in California again and took "Psychopathology" and "Introduction to Psychoanalysis" courses. He also went to Korean Language and Literature & Korean Culture education at Chungnam National University in South Korea.
He started his clinical psychology MA at Okan University. He completed his master's degree by presenting "The Study of University Students’ Social Media Use and Its Relation with Personality Traits and Life Satisfaction". Today, he works as a clinical psychologist at Ibn Haldun University and is the coordinator of Counseling & Guidance Department.
He focuses on Positive Psychology and Addiction Problems. He collaborates in some works with the Green Crescent.
