Non-West-Centered International Politics: Reflections from Islamic and Chinese Thought

Center for Political Studies Presentations address current issues, examine completed studies from new perspectives, and include them in the academic agenda.

Burak Yuvalı will be the guest of the presentation organized by the Center for Political Studies. “Non-Western International Politics: Insights from Islamic and Chinese Thought” will be moderated by H. Asena Demirer.

In this presentation, the question “What can the studies carried out on non-western societies in international politics offer to the present day?” will be sought to be answered in general. In order to answer this question, an examination will be made through people, concepts, case studies, and traditions of thought. It is an indisputable fact that developing a solution proposal for the problem will be realized through awareness. Accordingly, modern political thought will be examined through the concepts of authority, legitimacy, nationalism, modernization, globalization, human rights, and global justice. The Non-West-Centered Theory of International Relations initiative, which draws attention with its critical discourse on Western-centeredness in international politics and tries to put forward new perspectives, will also be mentioned. The fact that the initiative offers an opportunity to question the essence of international politics is also among the issues addressed. In order for this challenge, which emphasizes the need for multivocality, to be convincing, it is essential to explain its proposal on the problem.

Traditions of thought that can offer alternatives with their accumulated knowledge and experience are in a critical position. The possibility of the emergence of original and new perspectives in international politics through the Islamic and Chinese traditions of thought is among the topics to be discussed in the presentation. The sphere of influence of the traditions of thought examined in the discourses to be produced for the crises and deadlocks in the current system is important. The implications of reintroducing the basic principles of the traditions of thought are intriguing.
