Schools in Islamic Political Thought

The Islamic Political Thought Project (IPTP) aims to reclaim the issues of political thought that were discussed in the pre-modern period of Islam and make them the agenda of today's world of scholarship and ideas, and thus to make maximum use of the past accumulation in the identification, analysis, criticism, and solution of current political problems. Through these studies, IPTP aims to be a project that will enable the training of experts especially in the dimensions of person, concept, issue, institution, period, literature, and region. The project is carried out in cooperation with ILEM and Sultanbeyli Municipality.

In the sixth workshop of the Islamic Political Thought Project, papers will be presented on the political conceptions of the Ibādiyya, Mu'tazila, Ismā'iliyya, Imāmiyya, Zaydiyya and Ahl al-Sunnah schools, which are among the sects that emerged in Islamic history, and by examining the development processes of their ideas on the subject, it will be tried to trace what kind of evolutions in ideas according to geography, time and socio-political conditions. A remarkable point here is that all of the schools to be examined -except for the Mu'tazilah if we ignore the approximately 15-year Mihne period- have come to power in the historical process and had the opportunity to put their ideas on politics/imamah into practice.

The first session of the workshop will discuss how political thought was shaped in the Ibādiyya Sect, Mu'tazilite School, and Early Shi'ite-Bātinism and which events influenced the formation of these schools. In the second session of the workshop, various political thoughts and issues in the Shiite-Imamiyya, Zaydiyya, and Sunni Tradition will be discussed.

Participation: The program will be held face-to-face on October 28, 2023, at ILEM terrace hall. It is open to everyone interested.
