The idea of Islamism continues its vitality as an important issue in scholarly circles. Recent developments in the Islamic world and Turkey have brought Muslims and the idea of Islamism back to a central position. In this respect, there has been a significant increase and mobility in the studies and publications on Islamism.
The problem of repetition, which is one of the biggest handicaps of the most discussed and talked about issues, has sometimes emerged in this subject, but original thoughts have also continued to be produced in the context of current developments. The fact that the idea of Islamism continues to exist in different areas of life and in a sense continues to exist as a factor that directs these different areas plays a role in the fact that Islamism is such a lively subject.
When the title “Islamist Journals in Turkey” is mentioned, it is obvious that one of these different areas of Islamist thought is meant; an area that has never been studied in its entirety until now. From the late Ottoman period to today's Turkey, journals have played an important role in the formation and discussion of Islamist thought and constituted one of the most important components of Islamist publishing.
With the “1960-80 Islamist Journals Symposium” organized within the scope of the Islamist Journals Project, which has been continuing its activities within the body of the Association for Scientific Studies (İLEM) for two years, Islamist thought in Turkey was discussed through journals for the first time. In the two-day symposium, the thought of Islamism in general will be discussed and the tendencies of this thought in Turkey, especially between 1960-1980, will be evaluated through the journals that were published in that period and can be seen as Islamist. In addition, what kind of issues Islamism agendized in those periods and what kind of approaches it showed towards current political, economic, social, etc. issues were analyzed comparatively through journals belonging to different schools. In this way, in a sense, the modes of production and discussion of Islamist thought in Turkey will be revealed and in this way, a bridge between the past perspective of Islamism and its future vision will be tried to be established.
The “1960-80 Islamist Journals Symposium” has created an important opportunity in this context. With this project and symposium, the process of addressing the idea of Islamism in Turkey more concretely through publications and journals has started to accelerate. This has paved the way for more in-depth and qualified discussions.
