The Establishment of Power: Origins and Legitimacy

The Islamic Political Thought Project (ISP) aims to reclaim the issues of political thought that were discussed in the pre-modern period of Islam and make them the agenda of today's world of scholarship and ideas, and thus to make maximum use of the past accumulation in the identification, analysis, criticism, and solution of current political problems. Through these studies, ISD aims to be a project that will enable the training of experts especially in the dimensions of person, concept, issue, institution, period, literature, and region. The project is carried out in cooperation with İLEM and Sultanbeyli Municipality.

In the fifth workshop of the Islamic Political Thought Project, The Establishment of Power: Origins and Legitimacy, the origins of power will be surrounded from four sides: theology, philosophy, fiqh, and political science traditions. Each of these 4 traditions will be discussed in detail in a session and the question of how power is established in the political thought of these traditions and with which conceptual tools it is legitimized will be sought.

In the first session of the workshop, both the theoretical determinants and practical determinants of the theological-political thought in the Mutazilite, Ashari, Maturidi, and Shiite traditions, as well as the relationality between these determinants will be discussed. The second session will focus on the philosophical origins of Islamic political thought and the forms of explanation in philosophical literature, starting from Plato and Aristotle in the context of Farabi, Ibn Sina, and Ibn Khaldun. The third session will focus on the jurisprudential origins and modes of explanation of Islamic political thought. The fourth session will focus on the question of the legitimacy of power rather than its establishment in the context of the politicnāme tradition since the politicnāme tradition is more concerned with the practices of power and the principles and concepts by which these practices are legitimized.

Participation: The program will be held face-to-face on June 10, 2023, at ILEM terrace hall. It is open to the participation of anyone interested.
