Within the scope of Specialized Presentations, İLEM Philosophy & Science addresses current issues, examines the completed studies with new perspectives, and includes them in the academic agenda.
On Friday, April 7, Samet Şenel will give a presentation titled “The Era of Copyright-Translations: Translation Activities in the Islamic World on the Road to Bayt al-Hikme” at İLEM on Friday, April 7. Based on his doctoral dissertation titled “Translation Activities in the Islamic World until Caliph al-Ma'mūn”, Şenel will re-evaluate and discuss the accepted knowledge on translation activities.
Most of the studies on translation activities have focused on the period of al-Ma'mūn and its aftermath, which constituted the peak period of translation activities in the Islamic lands and focused on the patron, the translator, and the translated work(s), which were among the main elements of translation activities in many issues in the pre-Ma'mūn period. In light of all these, the activities of Bayt al-Hikma during the Umayyad period and the early Abbasid period are evaluated. Şenel has conducted an investigation into the origins of translation activities in the Islamic world around the question “Is it possible to think otherwise?”.
In this investigation, Şenel puts forward the idea that not every work written in the field of ancient sciences in Arabic was directly translated by focusing on the concepts of composition and translation. In addition, he points out that the Persians were also in the service of the court during the Umayyad period and that the Abbasids were not the initiators of translation activities, but rather their continuers. Finally, Şenel touches upon the issue of Bayt al-Hikme, emphasizing that it was established as a private library and later transferred to the palace and gained the meaning of the palace library by expanding its meaning.
The program, which will be based on question-answer, will take place on Friday, April 7, 2023, at 16.00 at İLEM Terrace Hall. Everyone interested in the program is invited.
