The Role of Confucianism in the Secularization Adventure of the Modern West

The 201st event of Graduate Presentations will take place on Friday, October 25, 2024 at 18:00 at İLEM. The event, which will be moderated by Kadir Temiz and presented by Esra Çifci, will examine the effect of the religious nature of Confucianism, which was introduced to Europe by Jesuit missionaries between the 16th and 18th centuries, on the construction of concepts in modern thought, under the title "The Role of Confucianism in the Secularization Adventure of the Modern West".

Based on the doctoral thesis Esra Çifci's titled Debates on the Religious Nature of Confucianism in the 21st Century, the encounter between Christian Europe and Confucian China in the early colonial period and its effects on modern Western thought will be discussed. In the presentation, the role of the debates about the religious nature of Confucianism and the concept of "religion" in the modernization process will be investigated. It will be argued that these discussions separating reason and revelation played an important role in the reformulation of both secularism and the concept of "religion". While this presentation sheds light on the influence of the East on modern Western thought and concepts, it will also add an ideological dimension to the debates around the religious nature of Confucianism.

The question-answer-oriented program will take place on Friday, October 25, 2024, at 18:00, on the 1st Floor of the İLEM Library Building. Everyone who is interested in the program is invited.
