In the sixth of Nazariyat Talks, Mehmet Aktaş gave a talk titled “The Universal Model of Kalam Atomism: The Theory of States” on İLEM TV live broadcast.
In the presentation, the understanding of universals, which is limited to the predicates of certain propositions in the pre-Ghazālī understanding of kalām and known as the “ahwāl/states theory” was discussed. First, the theologians who adopted this theory were mentioned, and then Imām al-Haramayn al-Juwaynī, one of the prominent figures of the Ashʿarite school, took center stage. After introducing the theory of states in general terms, it was pointed out that this theory has a structure compatible with theological atomism and that it differs from the universal conception inherited from the Aristotelian tradition in three main points (form, scope, and place).
