Ahlâk ve Başkası

(Ethics and the Other)

This book is designed to address the ways in which otherness is transformed into excluded otherness and to discuss this within the idea of morality. For if a moral relationship is not established with the ontological existence of another, the other's alienation emerges.

Today, problems arising from otherness are on the agenda all over the globe. Xenophobia, ethnocentrism, racism, religious fanaticism, Islamophobia and nationalism are among the rising threats of our time. While nation-states resort to identity-reinforcing politics with exaggerated security discourses to overcome their legitimacy crises, the socio-cultural crises they face push the masses towards otherizing language. Increasing global conflicts and the resulting waves of migration bring up traumatic encounters with the other. In this context, a new view of morality and the other is needed. If the existence of the other, which contains an idea of morality in its essence, is taken as the basis of human life, a definition without othering can be realized and this definition can reveal a moral obligation.

Within the framework of this perspective, the book includes essays that deal with the concepts and debates on the other in modern philosophy and Islamic thought. Thus, it aims to provide a general and comparative perspective as well as a new approach.
