Since the moment we were convinced that humans are born into a world devoid of inherent meaning and are defined by the functions or roles imposed upon them from the moment they open their eyes, expecting something from humans has become increasingly difficult. Moreover, such expectations have always been confronted with demands for freedom. This book emerged from a strong belief that the question "What can we expect from a free human?" can still be meaningfully asked. Different conceptions of human beings in the Islamic intellectual tradition are optimistic regarding our expectations of humans, despite their differences.
