(The Concept of Conscience in Islamic Thought)
The concept of conscience, which is one of the key concepts for ethical thought, is frequently used today in the sense of "moral consciousness". When we look at Islamic thought, it is difficult to say that the word conscience is used in this sense or that it is commonly mentioned with such a content. As a matter of fact, in many texts, this concept is used in the epistemological sense of intuition, not in the moral sense.
The aim of this study is to examine the concept of conscience in Islamic traditions and to determine its meaning in these traditions. This makes it necessary for us to deal with texts that aim to analyze the mental states that lead to the formation of the agent's moral awareness in the face of an action and its practical consequences, regardless of whether conscience is mentioned in literal terms or not. If we do so, we will not only find the opportunity to reinterpret classical texts on moral psychology, but we will also contribute to the reproduction of Islamic moral philosophy.
In this book, which consists of the papers presented at the Conscience in Islamic Thought Workshop hosted by İLKE-İLEM on 3-4 June 2016 within the scope of the Islamic Moral Thought Project, the problematization of the inner state that encourages human beings to right action, their reflections in different fields and their psychological-theological foundations are discussed in terms of the relevant traditions.
