İslam'ı Uyandırmak: Meşrutiyet'ten Cumhuriyet'e İslamcı Düşünce ve Dergiler

(Awakening Islam: Islamist Thought and Journals from the Constitutional Monarchy to the Republic)

Recent developments in the Islamic world and Turkey have brought Muslims and the idea of Islamism back to the center of discussions. Following this interest, there has been a significant increase in the number of studies and publications in the field of Islamism. The fact that the idea of Islamism is such a lively subject is due to its penetration into different areas of life. However, as with many issues that are discussed and debated a lot, one of the biggest problems of discussions on Islamism is the tendency to fall into repetition. In order to overcome this problem, it is necessary to turn from studies that deal with the issue in general terms to more specific and detailed studies.

The Islamist Journals Project, which was launched by the Association for Scientific Studies (İLEM) in 2013, aims to bring a new dimension to the thought of Islamism and the discussions on it and to contribute to the rethinking of the issues related to Islamism through journals, which are the most important primary sources of Islamist thought. As a product of this effort, this book consists of the papers presented at the 2nd Islamist Journals Symposium on "Islamist Thought and Journals Before 1960" held on March 11-12, 2017.

It focuses on the period from 1908 to 1960, when the idea of Islamism was first sprouted and shaped in journals, and examines the basic dynamics, founding names and discussion areas of important journals of the period. In this work, which includes articles by scholars specialized in the field of Islamism studies, a close reading is made of names associated with Islamism thought in different periods such as Mehmet Akif, Eşref Edib, Bediüzzaman Said Nursi, Said Halim Pasha, Ahmet Hamdi Akseki, Ömer Rıza Doğrul, Şemseddin Günaltay, Emrullah Efendi, Abdurrahim Zapsu, Ziya Şakir, Osman Yüksel Serdengeçti. In this context, journals such as Sırât-ı Müstakîm, Sebilürreşad, Volkan, Teârüf-i Müslimîn, İslam Türk Mecmuası, Hareket, Serdengeçti, Hikmet, Ahl-i Sünnet, Cerîde-i İlmiyye, Hak, İslam'ın Nuru and Selamet, which had important functions in the formation, development and transmission of Islamist thought, were focused. Islamist journals published between 1908 and 1960 have been analyzed from a rich perspective through a historical inquiry, and thus certain breaking points, tendencies, continuities of Islamist thought and its relationship with other components of society have been tried to be shown.
