Şerhu’l-Ahlâki’l-‘Adudiyye

(Sharh al-Akhlâq al-'Adudiyya/Author Unknown)

Adūd al-Dīn al-Ījī (d. 756/1355), whose writings had a significant impact on the thought of the later period after the 7th/13th century, had a similar impact on the field of ethics. As a matter of fact, al-Ījī's brief ethical treatise al-Akhlāq al-'Adudiyya was the subject of nine different commentaries after him, as far as can be determined.

Although the author of this work, which is one of the commentaries on al-Akhlāq al-'Adudiyya, cannot be identified, it is known that it was dedicated to Sultan Baysungur (d. 837/1434), one of the Timurid statesmen. The work, which historically ranks first among the commentaries on Ahl al-Adudiyya, contains some characteristics of its period since it was written in Herat during the Timurid period. When evaluated together with other commentaries, the differences and similarities of the work will become clearer, and it will be an important contribution to the interpretation of the Ahl al-Adudiyya commentary tradition in a holistic manner.
