Şerhu’l-Ahlâki’l-Adudiyye / Taşköprîzâde Ahmed Efendi

Adud al-Dīn al-Ījī's (d. 756/1355) Ethics al-Adudiyya, which continues the post-Fārābī line in Islamic ethical thought characterized by Ibn Miskawayh and Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī, is a very important work in that it succinctly reflects the general principles of practical philosophy (practical wisdom). The work, which attracted a great deal of attention, especially in Ottoman and Iranian scholarly circles, became the focus of commentaries and glosses after its publication. One of these commentaries is the Sharḥ al-Akhlāq al-Adudiyya of Taşköprīzāde Ahmed Efendi, one of the most important representatives of the prototype of the scholar who synthesizes the rational and the natural sciences in the Ottoman scholarly world.

When the introduction of the work is analyzed, one can clearly see Taşköprīzāde's endeavor to ensure the unity of theory and practice in his scholarly approach. This is because Ṭāshkubrīzāda holds the view that philosophical sciences, both in their theoretical and practical aspects, correspond to a prophetic effort and endeavor. This memzūj approach of his can be clearly seen in this commentary, which would become an important work of philosophical ethics literature. Ṭāshkubrīzāda, who reveals his background in religious sciences as well as explanations and analyses reflecting his philosophical acumen throughout the work, is almost a cornerstone of Islamic ethical thought in the process from al-Ṭūsī to Kinālizāda.
