One of the factors that made the 19th century the "longest century" for the Ottoman Empire was undoubtedly the changes and transformations in the field of law. Like many other areas, law witnessed significant changes in various aspects during this century. More importantly, law became both a means and a driving force behind the changes and transformations of this period.
To understand what took place in the field of law in the 19th century, it is necessary to consider both the changing face of law and its transformative role as a tool. This study focuses on certain fundamental issues of late Ottoman legal thought, taking into account these two aspects of law. Diverse researchers delve into intriguing discussions on topics such as crime and punishment from the Tanzimat era to the Constitutional Period, sharia courts and legal reforms after the Second Constitutional Period, and the introduction of legal education, among others.
