As one of Turkey's most important institutions, the Diyanet is today at the center of multidimensional debates. The confusion over religious knowledge, populism, the adequacy of religious knowledge in formal and non-formal education institutions, and daily religious life inevitably bring about a debate in which the Diyanet will be involved. On the other hand, the need to restructure religion-state and community relations has also emerged as a necessity. Beyond these, changing world conditions have also brought the problem of representation of different religious interpretations to the agenda. Therefore, rapidly changing needs, the spread of information on a global scale, technological innovations, as well as the situation of congregations, interpretations and sects, necessitate a policy change in the structure and functions of the Diyanet. At the crossroads of these problems, the idea that the Diyanet should be abolished will deepen the crisis. However, it is important for the Diyanet to restructure and strategize within the current needs and expectations. This article both identifies the problems and offers suggestions for strategies.
