The Scientific Studies Association (ILEM) was founded in 2002 with the view of training and supporting the scientists and intellectuals who are expected to suggest encompassing solutions for the problems that have been taking place for over two centuries. ILEM’s main objectives are to conduct scientific research on suggesting solutions for humanity’s questions by laying the groundwork for training scientists who preserve the scientific tradition. ILEM hopes its scientific studies will inspire various groups in Turkey and abroad.

ILEM Istanbul Talks is a new program series initiated by the Scientific Studies Association (ILEM). In this talk, Sari Hanafi (Speaker) and Mohamed El-Tahir El-Mesawi (Moderator) will discuss Sharia and Social Sciences: A New Approach of Knowledge.

Sari Hanafi

Sari Hanafi is currently a Professor of Sociology at the American University of Beirut and Chair of the Islamic Studies program. He is the President of the International Sociological Association. Recently he created the “Portal for Social impact of scientific research in/on the Arab World” (Athar). He was the Vice President of the board of the Arab Council of Social Science. He is the author of numerous journal articles and book chapters on the sociology of religion, sociology of (forced) migration; politics of scientific research; civil society, elite formation and transitional justice. He is as well editor of Idafat: the Arab Journal of Sociology (Arabic) Among his recent books are: Knowledge Production in the Arab World: The Impossible Promise. (with R. Arvanitis). He is the winner of 2014 Abdelhamid Shouman Award and 2015 Kuwait Award for social science. In 2019, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate (Doctor Honoris Causa) of the National University of San Marcos (the first and the leading university in Lima- Peru – established in 1551).

Mohamed El-Tahir El-Mesawi

Dr Mohamed El-Tahir El-Mesawi is a Tunisian who gained his doctorate on Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Heritage, from the International Islamic University Malaysia in 2003 and is currently a lecturer at the Department of Fiqh and Usul al-Fiqh, International Islamic University, Malaysia. Dr E-Mesawi is Editor of at-Tajdid and managing editor of Islāmiyat al-Ma‛rifah, both refereed scholarly Arabic journals. He has published numerous scholarly papers on Islamic Studies and philosophy and has won awards for translation and academic excellence. He is editor of a forthcoming book, The Question of Minorities in Islam: Theoretical Perspectives and Case Studies.

İlmi Etüdler Derneği (İLEM), 2002 yılında İslam medeniyetinin köklerinden hareketle günümüz ilim anlayışını yeniden yorumlama, sahih bir hayat nizamı için gerekli bilgi birikiminin oluşumuna katkı sunma gayesiyle kuruldu. İLEM, geleneğin birikiminden yeni bir düşüncenin inşasına fikrini paylaşan ilim insanlarının yetişmesine zemin oluşturacak ve insanlığın sorunlarına çözüm üretecek çalışmalar gerçekleştirme gayretindedir.

İLEM, düşünce dünyamızda müspet gelişmelere yol açabilmesi için akademik çalışmanın mahiyet ve gayesi üzerine yeniden düşünmenin gerekliliğine inanmakta ve ilmi çalışmalarını bu yönde şekillendirmektedir.

ILEM Istanbul Talks; her ay gerçekleştirilmesi planlanan yeni bir program serisidir. Sosyal Bilimler alanında çalışmalarını sürdüren akademisyenler programda moderatör eşliğinde konuşmalarını gerçekleştirecektir. Serinin dördüncü programında Sari Hanafi tarafından “Sharia and Social Sciences: A New Approach of Knowledge” başlıklı bir konuşma gerçekleştirilecek ve moderatörlüğünü ise Mohamed El-Tahir El-Mesawi yürütecektir.
