The Scientific Studies Association (ILEM) was founded in 2002 with the view of training and supporting the scientists and intellectuals who are expected to suggest encompassing solutions for the problems that have been taking place for over two centuries. ILEM’s main objectives are to conduct scientific research on suggesting solutions for humanity’s questions by laying the groundwork for training scientists who preserve the scientific tradition. ILEM hopes its scientific studies will inspire various groups in Turkey and abroad.
ILEM Istanbul Talks is a new program series initiated by the Scientific Studies Association (ILEM). In this talk, Andrew F. March (Speaker) and Oğuzhan Göksel (Moderator) will discuss the Rule of the People and Islamic Thought.

Andrew F. March
Andrew F. March is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He previously taught in the Political Science Department at Yale University and has taught Islamic law at Yale and NYU law schools. His research and teaching interests are in the areas of political philosophy, Islamic law and political thought, religion, and political theory. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Oxford, where he studied as a Marshall Scholar. His book, Islam and Liberal Citizenship (Oxford University Press, 2009) is an exploration of the Islamic juridical discourse on the rights, loyalties, and obligations of Muslim minorities in liberal politics;it won the 2009 Award for Excellence in the Study of Religion from the American Academy of Religion. He has published articles on religion, liberalism, and Islamic law in the American Political Science Review, Philosophy & Public Affairs, Journal of Political Philosophy, European Journal of International Law, and Islamic Law and Society, among other publications. While a Visiting Scholar at MEI during the 2018-2019 academic year, he completed his book manuscript on the problem of divine and popular sovereignty in modern Islamic thought, titled The Caliphate of Man, which was published by Harvard University Press in September 2019.
Oğuzhan Göksel
Dr. Oğuzhan Göksel is Assistant Professor of Political Economy at the Department of Economics, Marmara University, Turkey. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the UK-based journal New Middle Eastern Studies. He completed his multi-disciplinary Ph.D. degree on Political Science and Political Economy at Durham University, UK in 2015. Göksel’s works have been published in various edited books and international peer-reviewed journals such as Mediterranean Politics, British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies, and Turkish Studies. He is the co-editor of Turkey’s Relations with the Middle East: Political Encounters after the Arab Spring (New York: Springer, 2018). Göksel's main areas of research are modernization and non-Western modernities, political economy of development, foreign policy analysis, and comparative political economy.

ILEM Istanbul Talks, her ay gerçekleştirilmesi planlanan yeni bir program serisidir. Sosyal Bilimler alanında çalışmalarını sürdüren akademisyenler programda moderatör eşliğinde konuşmalarını gerçekleştirecektir. Serinin ikinci programında Andrew F. March tarafından “The Rule of the People and Islamic Thought” başlıklı bir konuşma gerçekleştirilecek ve moderatörlüğünü ise Oğuzhan Göksel yürütecektir.
