In 1517, Jerusalem was captured by the Ottoman Sultan Selim I and was incorporated into the Ottoman Empire as a small provincial capital within the Sanjaq of Damascus. The city had no particular economic or military value and has always belonged to the class of 'medium cities' with a population amounts to only a few tens of thousands. Nevertheless, as the third holiest city in Islam, after Mecca and Medina, Jerusalem was deeply enshrined in the hearts of all Muslims. Therefore, it was to a greater or lesser extent to be a focus of attention for all Ottoman sultans.
The whole period of Ottoman rule, lasting exactly four centuries up to the British occupation of 1917, left its own trace and addition, which mainly overlapped with preexisting structures without erasing them. The presentation will explore the main Ottoman urban interventions in Jerusalem in terms of pattern of patronage, urban changes and choices of architectural forms.
