The Scientific Studies Association (ILEM) was founded in 2002 with the view of training and supporting the scientists and intellectuals who are expected to suggest encompassing solutions for the problems that have been taking place for over two centuries. ILEM’s main objectives are to conduct scientific research on suggesting solutions for humanity’s questions by laying the groundwork for training scientists who preserve the scientific tradition. ILEM hopes its scientific studies will inspire various groups in Turkey and abroad.

ILEM Istanbul Talks is a new program series initiated by the Scientific Studies Association (ILEM). In this talk, Seyyed Hossein Nasr (Speaker) and Nurullah Koltaş (Moderator) will discuss Traditional Islam and the Modern World: Challenges and Solutions.

As a preeminent intellectual and scholar of the time, Seyyed Hossein Nasr devoted his entire life to expound the meaning of Traditional Islam in a contemporary language. He tries to elaborate the inner aspects of the “tradition” as such in various planes from the philosophy to arts in the proper sense of the term.

According to Professor Nasr, the ordinary life can be called “daydreaming” from which one has the possibility to awaken by discovering the true identity, that’s to say, by yearning to discover the reality of God as well as journeying on a path that leads to Him. Although few in number, the aspirants of the truth are expected to establish a harmony and equilibrium in view of the heart and the soul to rediscover the sacred, especially during these days when we witness the process of secularization gradually removes the sense of the sacred from our life and thought.

Seyyed Hossein Nasr

Seyyed Hossein Nasr, currently University Professor of Islamic Studies at the George Washington University, Washington D.C. is one of the most important and foremost scholars of Islamic, Religious and Comparative Studies in the world today. Author of over fifty books and five hundred articles which have been translated into several major Islamic, European and Asian languages, Professor Nasr is a well known and highly respected intellectual figure both in the West and the Islamic world. An eloquent speaker with a charismatic presence, Nasr is a much sought after speaker at academic conferences and seminars, university and public lectures and also radio and television programs in his area of expertise. Possessor of an impressive academic and intellectual record, his career as a teacher and scholar spans over four decades.

Born in 1933, Professor Nasr began his illustrious teaching career in 1955 when he was still a young and promising, doctoral student at Harvard University. Over the years, he has taught and trained an innumerable number of students who have come from the different parts of the world, and many of whom have become important and prominent scholars in their fields of study.

He has trained different generations of students over the years since 1958 when he was a professor at Tehran University and then, in America since the Iranian revolution in 1979, specifically at Temple University in Philadelphia from 1979 to 1984 and at the George Washington University since 1984 to the present day. The range of subjects and areas of study which Professor Nasr has involved and engaged himself with in his academic career and intellectual life are immense. As demonstrated by his numerous writings, lectures and speeches, Professor Nasr speaks and writes with great authority on a wide variety of subjects, ranging from philosophy to religion to spirituality, to music and art and architecture, to science and literature, to civilizational dialogues and the natural environment.

For Professor Seyyed Hossein Nasr, the quest for knowledge, specifically knowledge which enables man to understand the true nature of things and which furthermore, "liberates and delivers him from the fetters and limitations of earthly existence," has been and continues to be the central concern and determinant of his intellectual life.

Nurullah Koltaş

Nurullah Koltaş was born in Eskişehir. He grew up in Konya. He graduated from NE University with an undergraduate degree on ELT. He taught English for many years in various schools. After having an MA degree on Sufi Studies, he completed a PhD in Theology on “Theological Views of the Traditionalist School”. He teaches at Trakya University Faculty of Theology. He translated many books on philosophy and Sufism by Seyyed Hossein Nasr, Martin Lings, Adonis etc. He also wrote a few books on Sufism.

İlmi Etüdler Derneği (İLEM), 2002 yılında İslam medeniyetinin köklerinden hareketle günümüz ilim anlayışını yeniden yorumlama, sahih bir hayat nizamı için gerekli bilgi birikiminin oluşumuna katkı sunma gayesiyle kuruldu. İLEM, geleneğin birikiminden yeni bir düşüncenin inşasına fikrini paylaşan ilim insanlarının yetişmesine zemin oluşturacak ve insanlığın sorunlarına çözüm üretecek çalışmalar gerçekleştirme gayretindedir.

İLEM, düşünce dünyamızda müspet gelişmelere yol açabilmesi için akademik çalışmanın mahiyet ve gayesi üzerine yeniden düşünmenin gerekliliğine inanmakta ve ilmi çalışmalarını bu yönde şekillendirmektedir.

ILEM Istanbul Talks; her ay gerçekleştirilmesi planlanan yeni bir program serisidir. Sosyal Bilimler alanında çalışmalarını sürdüren akademisyenler programda moderatör eşliğinde konuşmalarını gerçekleştirecektir. Serinin üçüncü programında Seyyed Hossein Nasr tarafından “Traditional Islam and the Modern World: Challenges and Solutions” başlıklı bir konuşma gerçekleştirilecek ve moderatörlüğünü ise Nurullah Koltaş yürütecektir.

Seyyed Hossein Nasr, içinde bulunduğumuz dönemin önde gelen entelektüelleri ve düşünürleri arasında yer almaktadır. Hayatını “Geleneksel İslam’ın” anlamını modern dil içerisinde açıklamaya ve anlatmaya adamış ve halihazırda da bu çalışmalarına devam etmektedir. Nasr, felsefeden sanata birçok alanda “geleneğin” özüne yönelik hususiyetlerini anlatmayı gaye edinmiştir.

Nasr, sıradan hayatı bir “düş kurma” silsilesi olarak adlandırabileceğimizi ifade eder. Bu “düş kurma” eyleminden ise ancak özümüzü keşfederek, başka bir ifadeyle; aslında hakikati keşfetme arzusu ve özlemi içerisinde bulunarak ve Hakk’a götüren istikamet üzere olarak kurtulabileceğimizi bildirir. Nasr, hakikat arayışının bu kadar göz ardı edildiği bir dönemde öze dair olanı yeniden keşfetmek için kalp ile ruh arasında denge kurmanın önemini ifade eder. Bilhassa sekülerleşme sürecine bu kadar yakından tanık olduğumuz ve manevi duygularımızın hayatımızdan ve düşüncelerimizden hızlıca uzaklaştırıldığı bir dönemde böylesine müstesna bir gayretin gerekliliğinin altını çizer.
