Call for Participation: Social Justice and Poverty in Muslim World

After two summer schools in 2013 and 2014 under the titles of “Transformation of Muslim World in the 21st Century” and “State and Society in Muslim World”, the main theme for the 3rd Summer School is “Social Justice and Poverty in Muslim World”.

In the contemporary Muslim world, the issue of social justice and poverty awaits special attention and solutions. Most Muslim countries experience and suffer from wars and colonial pressures, which results in increasing degree of poverty. This being the case, social justice is becoming a more important and vital issue of analysis. In addition, the concept of social justice cannot be realized apart from eradicating the problem of poverty on a global scale. For Muslims and non-Muslim alike, it is vital to analyze these socio-political processes from a historical perspective, tracing the reasons for poverty in the Muslim world. For this purpose, Scientific Studies Association (ILEM) cordially invites researchers from around the world to share their intellectual experience in the 3rd International ILEM Summer School held on August 1-9, 2015 at Konya. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following:

  • How and to what extent is social justice understood and exerted in different parts of Muslim world?
  • What are the reactions and interpretations to debates on social justice from within and without the Muslim world?
  • What is the relationship between social justice and poverty?
  • What are the explicit and implicit reasons, sources and consequences of poverty in contemporary Muslim countries?
  • Which measures could be taken to eradicate poverty in both the Muslim context and on a global scale?
  • What are the subtle measures that are taken by global and local organizations, and to what extent are they efficient in solving the problem of poverty, and in establishing social justice in Muslim countries?
  • To what extent is the issue of social justice and poverty dealt with in academic circles, and what are the solutions that have been proposed so far?

Only graduate students can participate in the program. Applications must be completed through this online form. The program is limited to 45 participants. Travel fees of some selected participants and accommodation of all participants will be covered by the organizational committee. The language of the program is English.
