The third issue of the journal Human and Society, whose first issue was published in June 2011, has been published. Human and Society, which deals with the problems of humans and society in an interrelated manner without being confined to disciplinary boundaries, includes important studies in the fields of social, human, and religious sciences in its third issue.
In this issue of the journal, which adopts the principle of publishing original and critical studies, Metin Demir's article on Friday sermons through Althusser's concept of "ideology", "Looking at the Environment from the Pulpit: The Presentation of the Environmental Problem in Friday sermons". In his article, Demir analyzes the discourse of the sermons published by the Istanbul Mufti's Office between 2001-2011 and argues that Friday sermons can be considered as one of the ideological state apparatuses. Halil İbrahim Erol, on the other hand, in his article titled "Şanizade Mehmet Ataullah: An Example of Ottoman Historical Conception and Writing", analyzes the work titled Tarih-i Şanizade by Şanizade Mehmet Ataullah Efendi, who worked as a chronicler in the early nineteenth century. Süleyman Güder and Muhammed Hüseyin Mercan's "The Basic Parameters of Turkish Foreign Policy after 2000 and the Middle East Policy" questions whether there has been a paradigmatic shift in Turkey's Middle East policy.
Latif Karagöz, in his article titled "Theory or Reality: Positioning and Searches Against Dominant Therapy Theories and Practices", Latif Karagöz presents research on how psychotherapists evaluate the current state of psychological science and therapy services in Turkey, what their theoretical and methodological preferences are in therapy practices, and whether they seek alternatives against dominant theories and methods. Ahmet Köroğlu, in his article titled "Political Liberalism Practices Emerging in Turkey in the 1990s", examines the practice of political liberalism that emerged for the first time and in an effective sense in Turkey in the 90s. Murat Şimşek, on the other hand, in his article titled "Criminal Capacity of the Child in Terms of Islamic Law and Positive Law: Exchange as a Method of Dispute Resolution", Murat Şimşek seeks answers to questions such as whether the child is capable of criminal capacity, from what age he/she will be subject to criminal responsibility, and what kind of sanctions this responsibility will bring.
Serhan Afacan on "Books on Iran Published in Turkey in the 20th Century" and Mehmet Fatih Uslu on "Can Avant-Garde Art be Imagined without Politics?" contribute to this issue of İnsan ve Toplum with their review articles.
In addition to original articles and reviews, the pages of İnsan ve Toplum also include a large number of book reviews to establish a culture of criticism, which is the first condition for academic sharing and development. The aim is to create an academic neighborhood that develops by considering each other, especially with the evaluations of works produced in Turkey.
The subject of the fourth issue of İnsan ve Toplum, which can be followed as a free member at www.insanvetoplum.org, is secularism. The deadline for submission of articles for the fourth issue to be published in December is August 31, 2012.
