ILEM realized another important project and organized the Islamic Periodicals Symposium.
Academic Studies Association (ILEM), which has been continuing its scholarly activities with its original studies since its establishment, brought together the names who personally took part in magazine publishing in the 1960-80 period.
Islamic Periodicals Symposium, organized in cooperation with Academic Studies Association and Üsküdar Municipality, was held on March 13-14 at Bağlarbaşı Congress and Culture Center.
During the two-day symposium, 5 sessions were held under the titles of “Rethinking Islamism and Islamic Publishing”, “Transcending the Official Space and the Search for Civilian Media”, “The Local Language of Islamism: Literary Journals”, “New Searches in Thought and Action”, “Reflections of Institutional Accumulation”. In a special session organized within the scope of the symposium and titled Witnesses, important names who played a role in magazine publishing between 60-80 came together with the audience.
In the symposium where presentations and discussions were made about Mavera, Hilal, Düşünce, Diriliş, Tohum, İslam Medeniyeti, Büyük Doğu, Şura, Tevhid, Çatı, Milli Gençlik, Akıncı, Yeniden Milli Mücadele, Edebiyat and many other magazines, the Witnesses Session was followed with great interest.
In the Witnesses session, valuable names such as İsmail Kazdal, Beşir Eryarsoy, Turan Koç, Hasan Güneş and Selahaddin Eş Çakırgil, who took part in the publishing of the period and witnessed the developments closely, shared their experiences with the younger generations.
In his speech, İsmail Kazdal talked about his time working with Necip Fazıl at Büyük Doğu and how Hilal magazine started its publishing life and how he overcame the difficulties he faced in this process.
Beşir Eryarsoy started his speech by reading the news they published about Selahaddin Eş Çakırgil in Düşünce Magazine, announcing Çakırgil's arrest. Eryarsoy continued his speech in this vein and drew attention to how difficult it was to express an opinion in the 60-80 period. In his speech, Eryarsoy also drew attention to the translations made in that period and stated that these translations were carried out with great difficulties and were often inadequate.
In his speech in the Testimonies Session, Turan Koç shared with the audience how he started working at Diriliş and Edebiyat magazines and what his journey from apprentice to master was like. In his speech, Koç emphasized the importance of the translations they made in the 60-80 period and shared his experiences in the field of magazine publishing by including the works in Edebiyat Magazine and the events that happened to them during this period.
Selahaddin Eş Çakırgil, who shared his experiences in Tevhîd and Hicret magazines, started his speech by emphasizing how difficult conditions were for those who published between 60-80. Cakırgil emphasized that after the 1950s, the social situation started to be realized, and shared with the audience what kind of difficulties they had to shoulder in order to struggle during the period when this was at its peak.
Hasan Güneş made the last speech in this special session titled “Testimonies”. In his speech, Güneş drew attention to the conditions of the period, emphasized that the environment in the 1980s was the environment of movement, and related this to the name of the magazine before mentioning his work in the Islamic Movement Magazine. Güneş gave examples from the titles of the Islamic Movement magazine and also informed the audience about the magazine's editorial policy, political vision and the articles and topics they wrote during their struggle in the 60-80 period.
After the speeches of the master journalists who served in the magazines, which were the bastion of ideas of the period, the question and answer session began. The session, which was enriched by the listeners who contributed in this section, took the form of a documentary.
An important exhibition was also organized within the scope of the two-day symposium. The Islamist Magazines Exhibition, consisting of 120 magazine covers selected as a result of in-depth scans among the magazines published between 60-80, was watched with great interest for two days.
