The Ottoman Book Culture Project as a cultural study which was initiated by İLEM with the participation of undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students began in 2013. Its aim is to understand the relationship between the Ottoman Empire and books and the culture it formed in this context, within its historical and societal framework.
The project focuses on the manuscript book culture of the Ottoman Empire through the library of Cârullah Efendi, a prominent Ottoman scholar and judge of the 17th-18th centuries. By utilizing the marginal notes found in the collection of approximately 2,200 works still preserved in the Süleymaniye Library, the project analyzes the sciences represented in these works and the book culture reflected in them.
