Philosophy of Life Sciences

This is an introductory reading group in the philosophy of the living sciences. It will start with the history of biology and then move on to an important work on the philosophy of biology. This reading group, which includes one book each from the fields of sociology of science, biopolitics, and posthumanism, can also be considered as a precursor and the beginning of the next reading group. In its most general form, it aims to train young generations in the field of Philosophy of the living Sciences.

In this group, which is a very shortened and condensed version of a long reading list, we will start with the history of biology and then move on to an important work on the philosophy of biology. In this way, it will be possible to focus more on the content of a work that has recently been introduced to Turkish literature. This work is very important because it is the last work of Ernst Mayr, who has doctoral degrees in both biology and philosophy and has made serious contributions to the formation of literature, especially in English, with various academic products in both biology and philosophy of biology. The philosophy of biology, which we should note is a product of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, is of course the result of a certain historical adventure. Therefore, first, a work that points to this historical experience is included in the reading list. Immediately after this, in the most general terms, the characteristics of the Philosophy of Life Sciences that distinguish it from the mainstream philosophy of science will be mentioned. This brief reading group, which includes one book each from the fields of sociology of science and biopolitics, can also be considered as a precursor and prelude to the next reading group. All the works on the list will be critically analyzed. We accept and claim that only with a critical perspective is it possible to produce epistemic and ontic material to be used in future synthetic studies. This reading group aims to train young generations in the field of Philosophy of the Live Sciences, and therefore, a writing product is expected from the participants at the end of the semester.

The reading group is open to graduate students and students in the final stages of their undergraduate studies. Since the sessions will be centered on reading and discussion, the interests and backgrounds of the participants in the field are important.
